When you set up a new router, you're almost always presented with two network bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Sometimes three, if you've got a Wi-Fi 6E router with 6GHz support. And the instinct is to put everything on the highest number possible, because bigger means better, right? In networking, it really doesn't. Each band exists for a reason, and using the wrong one for a given device can actually make your experience worse.
The 5GHz advantage: Speed and less noise
The 5GHz band offers significantly more bandwidth and channels than 2.4GHz. Where 2.4GHz has only three non-overlapping channels (yes, only three — channels 1, 6, and 11), 5GHz has over twenty. This means less interference from neighbors, less congestion, and more room for your devices to operate without stepping on each other.
In raw throughput, 5GHz can deliver speeds that 2.4GHz simply can't match. If you're downloading a massive game update, streaming 4K HDR content, or transferring files between devices on your local network, 5GHz is the clear winner. It's also better for latency-sensitive activities like gaming and video calls, because the less congested airspace means fewer retransmissions and less jitter.
The 2.4GHz advantage: Range and wall penetration
Here's where physics gets in the way. Higher frequency radio waves have a harder time penetrating solid objects. A brick wall that barely slows down a 2.4GHz signal can cut a 5GHz signal in half. Add a floor between you and the router, and the difference becomes dramatic.
I tested this in my own apartment once. Standing in the same room as my router, I got 580 Mbps on 5GHz and 95 Mbps on 2.4GHz. Walk through two walls to the bedroom? 5GHz dropped to 120 Mbps. 2.4GHz was still at 72 Mbps. Go out to the balcony? 5GHz was barely usable at 18 Mbps with frequent drops. 2.4GHz held steady at 45 Mbps. The slower band was actually the more usable connection at that distance.
This is exactly why smart home devices, outdoor security cameras, and garage door openers use 2.4GHz exclusively. They need reliability at range, not raw speed.
What about Wi-Fi 6E and 6GHz?
If you have a newer router, you might have a third band: 6GHz. This is the newest addition and it's even faster than 5GHz with even more channels. The catch? The range is terrible. Like, genuinely bad. 6GHz signals struggle to get through a single wall. It's designed for devices in the same room as the router — or very close to it — that need absolute maximum performance.
Think of 6GHz as a VIP lane: blazing fast, but very narrow and only useful if you're already close to the on-ramp.
The practical cheat sheet
Use 5GHz (or 6GHz if available) for devices that are close to the router and need high performance: your gaming console, smart TV, primary laptop, desktop PC. Use 2.4GHz for everything else: smart plugs, light bulbs, security cameras, e-readers, devices in distant rooms, and anything that just needs a reliable connection without demanding high speeds.
If your router uses a single SSID for all bands (which most do these days), it handles band selection automatically. This usually works well for phones and laptops, but if you notice a specific device struggling, try creating a separate 2.4GHz-only SSID and manually connecting that device to it. It's a five-minute fix that solves a surprising number of "my Wi-Fi is slow" complaints.
